A How To Guide on HypeMachine

If you are in any way involved in the music industry you have probably heard of Hype Machine. If you are an up and coming artist in the music industry, you have DEFINITELY heard of Hype Machine and if you haven’t then there’s the reason why you haven’t blown up yet. For those of you who have no idea what Hype Machine (HypeM) is, don’t worry here’s what you need to know about HypeM and how to get your music noticed.
In the music world there are and endless number of music blogs that cover different topics and aspects of the industry. We all know that RisingMusicTalent is your favorite blog but even we know there are a lot of other blogs out there doing a very similar process as we are that are just as good. Many of the music blogs on the web focus on posting new music daily. Here at RisingMusicTalent we post a lot of new music, but we like to focus on the BEST new music. Regardless, the point is that there are thousands of blogs posting new music everyday. HypeM, in short, focuses on 740 of these blogs and keeps track of what each blog is posting everyday. Through an algorithm they have developed they are able to compile lists and lists of tracks that are popping up on the web everyday. They have a variety of tabs including ‘Latest’ that posts the most recent music on blogs, ‘Popular’ that posts the most blogged, played and liked tracks, and ‘Genres’ where you can search the top music in each genre. Instead of directly focusing on the music, HypeM focuses their time on the independent writers and bloggers to curate their site.  Although there are a lot of other websites and charts similar to HypeM, HypeM has definitely grown to be one of the top players in the trending music game
You might be thinking: Ok, so how does HypeM apply to rising artists in the industry? There are a few ways that HypeM helps out new artists tremendously. If a new artist is posted on 1 of their 740 blogs that they curate through, that track will appear in the feed on the ‘Latest’ tab. As a result, any viewer looking at the ‘Latest’ tab can come across that track and potentially become a new follower or fan of their music. The downside is that there is 740 blogs they curate through, so the feed is constantly flowing reducing face time as these blogs are posting track after track throughout the day. The ‘Genre” tab can help with this issue a little bit. If a viewer is looking on the ‘Genre’ tab under the specific genre that an artist track is labeled under, the time it stays on the front page is increased solely because not as many tracks are being posted under that specific genre. The way to really get noticed and create some exposure and face time for rising artists is to get trending on the popular page. There are other sub-tabs under the popular page but as we all know viewers do the least amount of work possible so having to click on more tabs is less likely. As a result, we are going to focus on the main popular page of HypeM and I will give some “How to” tips to get your song trending in the top!
As explained above, HypeM is one of the top sites viewers use to find new and popular music. The idea is if more than one blog is posting the same song it is probably a good track. If a lot of people “Heart”, or favorite, a track on HypeM it will show up in their popular page. The popular page is definitely the most viewed page HypeM has for obvious reasons. If you are an up and coming artist, a manager, talent finder, etc. the HypeM popular charts is where you want to be. In today’s age there is so much good music that it’s hard to rely solely on the fans to get your music to the popular charts.
As I mentioned before, HypeM relies on blogs to do the work and they curate from there. As a result, the first step to getting on HypeM is getting blogs to post your music. Under the tracks that HypeM does post it will read “posted by __ blogs” and if you click on that it will show you which blogs have posted the track and a direct link to their site. This is your starting point, all blogs will have an email submission posted somewhere on their site and getting in touch with them is the first step towards getting your song on HypeM. As you start to make these connections, a lot of blogs will continuously post your songs as you release more - its all about relationships, do whatever you can to put yourself in a good position with bloggers. Blogs have a chain reaction, once you get posted on one it is likely a couple more blogs will do a write-up on your track. Usually HypeM will create a link to your track on their site a couple days after blogs post it. Now you are one of the thousands of songs on the ‘Latest” tab. Moving from the ‘Latest’ tab to the ‘Popular’ tab is the difficult part, but I have some key points for you to follow to make it happen. As I said earlier, the ‘Popular’ tab is based on how many people “heart” your track on HypeM but it is a point system, and points are given for sharing the link across social media networks like Twitter. Social media is your biggest asset in getting your song on the popular page, I cannot stress that enough. Post the link across all your networks encouraging your friends and followers to “heart” your track for you. Get your friends or business network to post the link for you asking the same thing of their followers, the more people that post your link the more people that see it. Personally message your friends on social media networks, statuses and tweets are vague and indirect, people feel much more willing when they are contacted directly. The more blogs that post your song and the more people that post your HypeM link will determine how far you will rise on the ‘Popular’ tab. Some additional things to keep in mind:
1) The more people that “heart” your track on HypeM when it first appears the more likely you are to appear on the page.
2) Anyone that “hearts” your track MUST listen to the song for at least 45 seconds or the heart will NOT count.
3) The popular page changes everyday, to stay on the page for days at a time you need to shoot for the top 10. The top 10 is the first 10 songs you see when you hit the ‘Popular’ tab, as I mentioned earlier viewers want to do the least amount of work possible, as a result, only half of the people that view the top 10 will look at the top 20.

All in all HypeM is an awesome tool for getting noticed as an artist, if you get yourself or your artist on the popular page you will grow your following tremendously!
